Sir Walter Scott’s Waverley series of books was a cornerstone of 19th Century fiction, and it is considered the beginning of the concept of historical fiction. Originally written under a pseudonym, this series of novels depicts the dramatic world of Scotland’s history.
The first novel, Waverley, was a smash hit when it came out in 1814, although it is set in 1745 (a novelty of the time). As Scott continued his project, he became more expansive in the historic periods conveyed, and Ivanhoe (the 13th entry in the series) abruptly shifts us back to the year 1194 for its setting. The overall time period in these novels is the 12th to the early 19th Century.
Our complete 25-volume set pictured here is from 1856-1857 from Adam and Charles Black, and is in very good condition. It is bound in full leather, has raised bands, gilt inlay, and marbled end papers. The final volume has been professionally rebacked to match all the others. Every volume is vividly illustrated!
